A Games Section, and Archiving QuillPages

With the Adventure games live, the front page needed to catch up. It also needed to deal with the fact that I'm shutting down QuillPages.

Archive, don't delete

My first instinct was to remove QuillPages from the front page. I went with archiving instead: the card stays, marked ARCHIVED and dimmed, in its own section below the active work. Two reasons:

  • Someone landing on an old link finds an explanation instead of a hole.
  • The "Live" link would point at a site that's about to be gone, so the archived card simply has no link.

It also came out of the top-menu Projects dropdown, since that menu is for things you can click through to.

Games get their own section

There are now two cards, one for each version of Adventure 2026 (isometric and top-down), each with a Play button that opens the game on this site. A new Games dropdown in the top menu links straight to both.

The card component picked up a few small options for this: an archived status, a custom link label, and a same-tab link for pages on this site, since the old card assumed every link leaves for another site.

A bug I didn't cause, but made worse

Checking the page at phone width, the header was already wider than the screen: 487px of content on a 390px display, so the page scrolled sideways. Adding a sixth menu item pushed it to 569px. The header now wraps onto a second line on small screens, and the page fits at 390px.

I checked all of this by running the site locally and driving it with a headless browser: menu links, card links, the archived card with no link, and the phone layout.

What's next

  • Touch controls for the games, so they're playable on a phone
  • The daily world in the top-down version
